How was my child chosen?
During the first week of school, all first grade students were given a series of 4 tests. They were tested on letter names, sounds, sentence writing, and the number of words the student could write in 10 minutes. The scores were added together and the bottom 49% were then eligible for CLIP. Some students will go to CLIP in groups of 4 or individually, based on their reading needs.
What does the lesson look like?
Students choosen for CLIP will have a 30 minute time each day where they work one on one in reading and writing skills with a teacher. The first ten meetings together are called "roaming sessions". This is the time when the skills your child already has in place will be reinforced. The feeling of success and confidence is very important. Your child will then start CLIP lessons planned by the teacher, specifically for your child. Each lesson will include a reading of previously read books, writing sentences, word work, and the reading of a new book. Student's will also bring a book home to read each night. Your child's attitude is often patterened after yours. Your enthusiasm in this program and toward reading in general will be an important influence.
Benefits for Parents:
~Gives a chance to have frequent communication with the school
~Promotes family literacy sharing
~Provides an opportunity to participate in student's learning
~Encourages use of positive reinforcement
